Welcome to From the Editor – the very best from our newsroom delivered to your inbox daily.

Britain is facing a summer of anti-migration riots. Our police are not ready for them.

Writing for The Telegraph, Tiff Lynch, the head of the Police Federation, warns that officers will need to be dragged away from neighbourhood duties and re-directed to keep the peace. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage has accused Essex Police of facilitating unrest and demanded that “heads must roll” for their poor handling of the Epping riots earlier this week.

Police not ready for summer of unrest

Ben-Julian Harrington, the chief constable of Essex Police , has refused to resign over his handling of the protests

Will Bolton

Crime Correspondent

This summer, if widespread violent disorder erupts, police will be dragged off the beat to keep the peace at anti-migrant protests, the organisation representing rank-and-file officers has warned.

After days of protests against mass migration outside asylum hotels, and with more planned in the coming weeks, there are fears the UK could be heading for a second summer of unrest.

Writing for The Telegraph, Tiff Lynch, the head of the Police Federation, said that officers were being “pulled in every direction” and commanders were being “forced to choose between keeping the peace at home or plugging national gaps”.

Ms Lynch warned that already-underfunded police forces would be forced to drag officers away from neighbourhood policing duties to keep anti-migrant protests under control.

Protesters march outside The Bell Hotel in Epping on July 20

Police have already come under fire for escorting anti-racism protesters to the Bell Hotel in Epping, where violent disorder subsequently broke out.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, said the policing of the protest had been “absolutely disgraceful” and “heads must roll”.

Ben-Julian Harrington, the chief constable of Essex Police, refused to resign over his handling of the protests and denied his officers had given a higher level of protection to anti-racism activists.

Mr Harrington insisted that the only protection his officers were providing was to “lawful and law-abiding people”.

I’ve lived in Canada, Australia and Britain – this is my ranking of each

Canadian charm, Australian sunshine or British heritage – which is best? After stints living in all three Commonwealth countries, writer Kirsten Powley shares her verdict. For friendliness, she says, “Aussie zest for life, adventure and humour is a joy to be around”, although grocery shopping was a shock. Of course, rating an entire country is a subjective exercise but, as Kirsten notes, where’s the fun in staying neutral?

Every day our journalists discuss the day’s biggest issues with subscribers on our app and on our website.

Today, Annabel Denham, Acting Comment Editor, responds to a subscriber who commented on her article: Britain’s most persecuted group: white men.

Paisly Print

It’s not their fault that they can’t find competent women to be in the role right now when the BBC were interviewing them. Come back another time and things might be different.

Exactly. Far better to appoint the right man than the wrong woman. And when we obsess over a lack of female representation at the top of certain industries, we ignore the pipeline. Change cannot happen overnight, nor should it be forced to.
