Another summer of riots became a real concern for the Government yesterday when Angela Rayner told the Cabinet that mass migration is threatening community cohesion in Britain. Exactly how the Deputy Prime Minister plans to tackle the growing crisis remains a mystery, with no sense of urgency or plan in place. And yet outside of Westminster, the mood around immigration is becoming febrile.
Last night, Essex Police admitted “escorting” pro-migrant counter-demonstrators to an asylum hotel in Epping where violent confrontations erupted. Will Bolton, our Crime Correspondent, reports.

Chris Evans, Editor | | Today’s headlines | Britain must wake up Follow rigorous reporting on the threats to our democracy Enjoy 1 year for £25 in our Summer Sale | Essex officers brought counter-demonstrators to face angry locals, claim witnesses | Will Bolton Crime Correspondent | Last night, Essex Police admitted they had escorted a large group of anti-racism protesters to a migrant hotel that has been at the centre of days of unrest.
The past week has seen a number of demonstrations at The Bell Hotel, in Epping, after an asylum seeker staying at the accommodation was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
On Thursday, a crowd assembled outside the hotel to protest against the decision to house an unknown number of single adult males there. It had previously been used to house women, children and families.
The force had initially denied bringing the activists from Stand up to Racism to the hotel following claims by anti-migrant protesters that it was their arrival that initially sparked violent scenes on July 17.
When shown videos of the protesters being escorted by officers from a nearby station to the hotel, however, the force backtracked. A police van is left with a shattered windscreen during the clashes | Essex Police will today hold a press conference in which they are expected to explain their approach to the demonstrations.
Six people have been charged with offences related to the disorder, following further clashes between demonstrators and police on Sunday.
In a statement to The Telegraph, Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper said: “We have a reasonable duty to protect people who want to exercise their rights. In terms of bringing people to the hotel, the police have a duty to facilitate free assembly.”
Local residents believe that the decision to escort counter-protestors, some of whom were masked, towards the hotel made violence inevitable. Footage shared on social media suggested the confrontation escalated shortly after the arrival of the counter-demonstrators.
By Monday evening, the protests had spread to Norfolk after similar plans to house single male asylum seekers at a hotel were revealed. Read more ➤

In schools, difficulties they may face are frequently explained away as mental health issues or neurodivergence – it does not do them any favours. In this country the young have no consequences for bad choices and the Government picks up the pieces and provides. | | Poppy Coburn I couldn’t agree more. A recent conversation with a teacher friend of mine culminated in him almost shouting about the insanity of the local authority paying the salary of two full-time staff members who just drive to the houses of truants and ask if they’d like to come in. Of course there’s no enforcement mechanism. What happens when these children graduate? Does anyone seriously expect they’re going to go to work?
