Good evening.

We’re bringing you a special edition of From the Editor tonight after The Telegraph broke the exclusive news that Prince Andrew is to stop using his titles, including Duke of York.

The announcement earlier this evening followed a string of new scandals concerning the Prince’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and his association with an alleged Chinese spy. In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew said: “In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal family.”

This bonus newsletter is written by Hannah Furness, our Royal Editor. She explains how this former royal heartthrob fell from grace and created a poisonous crisis for the Royal family – and reveals what happens next.

Prince Andrew’s downfall has been long and painful. But the final blow was swift.

After years of allegations, veering from sex assault to friendship with a sex-trafficking paedophile to meetings with Chinese spies, Andrew has finally moved to do the right thing.

Late on a Friday night, after a few hours of swirling rumours, Buckingham Palace confirmed the Telegraph’s story that the former Duke of York would give up his title “voluntarily”, along with honours including his Order of the Garter.

To the public, it may not mean much. But to Andrew, the son of Queen Elizabeth II and brother of King Charles III, it will mean everything.

He has been allowed a modicum of dignity, putting out his own statement framing it as a move to help the rest of the Royal family move on.

“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first,” he said, in an echo of his Newsnight claims that he had simply been “too honourable”.

There has, of course, been more to it behind the scenes. The King, who has shown remarkable patience with his brother’s capacity for painful headlines over the years, is said to be glad of the outcome.

His strong encouragement of this decision can be inferred, as can the influence of the Prince of Wales, who has always made clear his lack of tolerance for Andrew’s behaviour.

Now, the Royal family will hope to draw a line under what has become known as the “Prince Andrew problem”.

If there is further scandal yet to come out – and Andrew’s track record suggests there may well be – they can at least now point to decisive action and a Prince who will no longer be known as a Duke.
